The violin is a member of the string family made of wool with steel strings. It
is about fourteen inches long and has a range of about three octaves. The
violin evolved from the Rebec and the Lira da braccio. The earliest four string
violins were used in Europe.
The violin is a chordophone - an instrument that produces sound from the
vibration of its strings.
Bowed instruments were created in the Middle East before they were known
in Europe, but it sis the European violin which is most commonly played.
