With only 3 ½ years of musical experience, Demetrius Turner II, nicknamed “DJ” has received notoriety on the U.S. East Coast from New York to South Carolina for his ability to play both Jazz and Classical music. DJ has performed at Jazz Festivals in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Virginia and has performed at Madison Square Garden and the United Nations. He’s won several first place awards, including Amateur Night at the Apollo and the New York Knicks Talents Kids Contest.
DJ has personally performed for actor Danny Glover, Philanthropist and Co-Founder of BET Television Station, Dr. Shelia Crump Johnson and has been noticed in the Smooth Jazz Community by Cameron Smith, President and Host of Smooth Jazz TV and mentioned in his recent Jazz article. His musical documentary entitled “In His Own Words” sponsored by the Vewiser Turner Sr., Youth Jazz Education Foundation was recently screened in Philadelphia at the BFMC film festival to positive reviews.
In addition to alto sax, DJ plays flute and piano. He recorded a demo CD at 12 yrs old and is working on some original compositions. DJ currently is in middle school and plans to continue studying and performing through high school.
DJ has been invited to tour with the Young Jazz Razzcals Project (YJRP) this summer and play at the Santa Fe and Telluride Jazz Festivals. Read additional information about DJ on the YJRP website.
