The guitar is a popular string instrument played by plucking or strumming.
The guitar originates from the Greek "kithara", even though instruments do
not sound similar. The guitar in its modern form originated in Spain in the
16th century. It has six strings and frets along the fingerboard to indicate
the notes. The strings are tuned in fourths, except the major third between
the fourth and fifth strings (E, A, D, G, B, E). The music for guitar is
notated one octave above its actual sound.
The first music genre that guitar became integral was the blues. Eventually,
guitar was amplified and it became a popular instrument among rock
musicians.
